  • About EPIC Risk Retention Group (www.epicrrg.com)

    Emergency Physician-Owned
EPIC is the only medical professional liability insurance company specializing in emergency medicine writing on a national basis that is owned exclusively by its policyholders, all of whom are emergency physicians and ER groups. To be an owner of EPIC one must be an ER Group or emergency physician-policyholder. To be an EPIC policyholder one must be an ER group or emergency physician-owner.

    Careful Risk Selection
EPIC employs a unique risk assessment process. In most cases, a team of physician-consultants conducts an on-site review and evaluation prior to the traditional technical insurance underwriting. If this risk assessment process indicates EPIC should not accept an ED group, the company will not offer a proposal. Alternatively, if the clinical risk evaluation is positive, EPIC will then offer the emergency medical group a coverage proposal.

    Focus On Patient Safety
EPIC believes that the linchpin to its long-term success lies in a total commitment to patient safety and risk management. Accordingly, all medical groups insured by EPIC are required to embrace this philosophy and agree to adopt the company’s model patient safety and risk management program. EPIC’s program emphasizes high quality on-site process and protocol that supports excellence in patient safety and high patient satisfaction. EPIC strongly encourages its policyholders to use today’s more sophisticated tools like electronic medical records and the integration of risk factor evaluation in the clinical assessment and decision-making process. EPIC’s conviction that patient safety is the critical link to its success is so strong that it will explore ways and means to assist with the financing of such electronic tools through a system of premium credits and other incentives.

Emergency Medicine Patient Safety Foundation (EMPSF)
To underscore its commitment to patient safety and risk management, EPIC and its business partner, the Nyhan Consulting Group, led the formation of EMPSF to serve as a key provider of such services to EPIC and policyholders. And, as the association-sponsor of EPIC and its professional liability insurance program, each EPIC policyholder is required to join the Emergency Medicine Patient Safety Foundation (EMPSF) as a condition of obtaining insurance coverage from EPIC. This not-for-profit educational foundation will provide most of EPIC’s patient safety and risk management services, collect statistical data on professional liability claims and conduct studies of patient safety issues facing emergency medicine and its constituencies. EMPSF will seek grants and independent funding sources to assure it has the financial resources to properly serve emergency medicine and the public it serves.
